Corona passport when travelling

If you are traveling to an EU or Schengen country that requires documentation for vaccine, test or previous infection, you can use the European corona passport. The Corona passport can also be used in a number of countries outside the EU and Schengen.

The EU's digital covid certificate (ec.europa.eu)

You can use the Coronapas app or a printed copy from sundhed.dk.

Is it valid?

Each country can set its own rules for validity of a corona passport, so you should check on the Danish embassy's website to find validity rules for the country you want to travel to: Find Danish embassies and consulates abroad (um.dk)

Does the app works on your phone?

For example, if you have not used the coronapas app for a long time, it may need to be updated or deleted and reinstalled. Find helpful answers here if you're having trouble getting the app to work: Coronapas app

Should you bring a print?

Avoid letting a dead battery, weak/absent signal, loss of phone etc. complicate your journey. Consider bringing a printed copy of your corona passport from sundhed.dk as well as your physical NemID key card or key card if you have not yet received a MitID. Then you can always log in and prove that you are fully vaccinated, even if you cannot access the coronapas app.

About corona passport

The coronapas app is valid as an EU Digital COVID Certificate, which all EU and Schengen countries accept as documentation of vaccination, negative test results or previous infection. However, please note that all countries can set their own requirements regarding the certificate's validity for domestic use or specific testing and isolation requirements. Therefore, you should always check the local travel rules for your destination.

You can use the coronapas- app or the printed corona passport from sundhed.dk as a valid European corona passport/covid certificate when travelling. If you are exempt from receiving digital post, your vaccine passport will be sent to you directly by post. You can also ask for a vaccine passport for travel use to be sent to you by calling sundhed.dk on telephone (+45) 44 22 77 74.

You can use your corona passport/covid certificate in all EU and Schengen countries as well as in the non-EU and Schengen countries that have become part of the EU Digital COVID Certificate cooperation. However, you need to check the specific entry requirements that each country sets. This applies to various rules for, for example, the validity of vaccination, negative tests and previous infection. Some countries also require a negative test in addition to a valid corona passport.

EU / Schengen countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands (Netherlands), Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the Vatican City.

Other countries affiliated to the European Coronapas

There may be countries in addition to these that recognize coronapas.

How to get a corona passport

You can obtain a corona passport/covid certificate with the Coronapas app if you have been vaccinated, previously infected (within the last five months) or tested negative with a PCR-test or rapid antigen tests.

Once you have completed your primary vaccination course, your corona passport will be valid. If your covid-19 vaccination requires two doses, the primary vaccination will be considered completed immediately after the final dose. If the vaccination course requires only one dose, it is considered completed 14 days after this one dose. After completing the primary vaccination, your corona passport, if you are 18 years or older, is only valid for five months. Upon revaccination, the corona passport then becomes valid again.

Documentation for a corona passport can be done both in paper format and electronically. A corona passport can, for example, be obtained in the form of the app Coronapas, which is activated with NemID or MitID, via the health authorities' app "Min Sundhed" or a printed document.

Digital corona passports

You are eligible for a digital corona passport once you can document that you have been vaccinated against, recently tested negative for, or have previously been infected with covid-19. See which types of documentation apply:

Your vaccination passport becomes valid 14 days after your first jab. You must get your second jab within 42 days of the first jab in order for your vaccination passport to remain valid. If vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson your vaccination passport becomes valid 14 days after your first and only jab.

You can find your vaccination passport (corona passport) in the following places:

  • As a corona passport in the corona passport app.
  • In the MinSundhed app.
  • Viewing and downloading your test results on sundhed.dk via your smartphone’s browser.
  • Other apps showing your vaccination status, e.g. MinLæge.

See answers to questions about corona passports and vaccination at sundhed.dk (Danish)

You can use a negative test result from a PCR-test or rapid antigen test as documentation. This will activate a valid corona passport.

From 1 April 2023, the public test centers, where you have been able to get the PCR test, will close. You can see your negative test result in the following places:

  • You can see your negative test result in the corona passport app.
  • You can also find your negative test result on the MinSundhed app.
  • Download and print a test passport from sundhed.dk if you have a negative PCR test result.
  • View your negative test result (both PCR and rapid antigen tests) on the sundhed.dk app or at the website under ‘Se dit covid-19 prøvesvar’ (See your covid-19 test result)
  • Use the test result you have received (e.g. by text message) from a private testing provider to document a negative rapid antigen test (RAT).
  • Use other apps that show your test results, e.g. MinLæge.

If you have previously been infected with covid-19, you can use this as documentation by showing the result from your positive PCR test. Positive rapid antigen tests cannot be used as corona passport documentation.

Your positive PCR test must be at least 11 days old and maximum 5 months old to qualify as valid documentation.

You can see your immunity passport (corona passport) in the following places:

  • You can see your immunity passport in the corona passport app.
  • You can find your immunity passport in the MinSundhed app.
  • View your test result at sundhed.dk under ‘Se dit covid-19 prøvesvar’ (also available via your smartphone’s browser).

Corona passports for people without digital access

It is also possible for you to document your corona passport without having digital access. You can read here, which types of documentation apply:

Documentation of vaccination against covid-19:

  • Individuals who have been vaccinated against covid-19 and who are exempt from receiving digital post will receive documentation of their vaccination (vaccination passport) directly via ordinary mail. This applies both after the first vaccination and when the individual is fully vaccinated.
  • Individuals who are vaccinated against covid-19 can also order a printed vaccination passport from sundhed.dk by phone on (+45) 44 22 77 74. This is possible both after the first vaccination and when the individual is fully vaccinated.

See questions and answers about corona passports and vaccination at sundhed.dk (Danish)

Documentation of a covid-19 test:

  • It is currently possible to get physical documentation of results from rapid antigen tests (RAT) carried out by private providers. These providers are required to provide physical documentation to any individuals who request it.
  • In addition, there is a proxy solution available via sundhed.dk, which enables relatives or guardians to view test results and download covid-19 test passports and covid-19 immunity passports.

If you have been infected with covid-19, you can get physical documentation for a positive PCR test from your doctor. The documentation can be used as a corona passport after at least 11 days and up to 5 months. It is not possible to get physical documentation for a rapid antigen test (RAT) from your doctor.

General questions about the corona passport

Updated: 4 April 2022

A corona passport documents that you have been fully vaccinated against, have been previously infected with, or have tested negative for covid-19 with a PCR-test or rapid antigen test.

Corona passport is no longer required in Denmark. However, public hospitals, nursing homes and social services may require corona passport when visiting.

Private organizations/cultural institutions and companies are allowed to require that guests, customers and employees present a negative test or must wear a face mask/visor. The requirements must not be discriminatory.

Corona passport can also be a requirement when you travel. Each country has different requirements for corona passes, and it is therefore important that you familiarize yourself with the country's rules before departure.

There are no requirements for the corona passport in Denmark.

However, if you intend to take a trip abroad, it is important to check the covid-19 rules in effect for the destinations in question, including the specific rules that apply to children. For trips abroad, parents can use the self-print solution on sundhed.dk for their children in addition to other test documentation if this is required by the country in question.

There are no requirements for the corona passport in Denmark. However, public hospitals, nursing homes and social services may require corona passport when visiting.

Private organizations/cultural institutions and companies are allowed to require that guests, customers and employees present a negative test or must wear a face mask/visor. The requirements must not be discriminatory.

If you enter a location, that requires you to show a valid corona passport, this is how you get a valid corona passport:

  • After vaccination: You will have a valid corona passport from 14 to 42 days after your first vaccination. In addition, you (from the age of 18) will have a valid coronapas immediately after you have been vaccinated with second dose if your vaccination course requires multiple doses. After the second dose your corona passport is valid for 5 months. If your vaccination course consists of only one dose, your corona passport will be valid after 14 days.
  • After negative test: You can obtain a valid corona passport with a negative PCR-test or rapid antigen test.
  • After previous infection: If you have previously been infected with covid-19 and have had a positive PCR test that is between 11 days and 5 months old, you will also have a valid corona passport.

If you have been vaccinated or previously infected, you have a corona passport, which you can find as an app, "Coronapas", on sundhed.dk or in the health authorities' app "MinSundhed".

Corona passport may be a requirement when travelling. The rules for a valid corona passport may vary from country to country - for example, not all countries have corona passport valid after the first vaccination. Therefore, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the rules before you travel.

NOTE: A negative self-test does not provide a valid corona passport.

You can prove that you have a valid corona passport using the corona passport app.

You will still be able to show valid corona passports from MinSundhed and sundhed.dk, as well as negative test results from private providers of rapid antigen tests.

It depends on how you show your valid corona passport.

If you use the corona passport app or the app MinSundhed, there is no requirement to present ID. This is because there are moving elements in the two apps that minimize the risk of fraud.

On the other hand, you must present ID if you use sundhed.dk, a printed corona passport, or documentation issued by private providers of rapid antigen tests (RAT). The purpose of this is to minimize the risk of passport fraud.

Documentation of vaccination against covid-19:

  • Individuals who have been vaccinated against covid-19 and who are exempt from receiving digital post will receive documentation of their vaccination (vaccination passport) directly via ordinary mail. This applies both after the first vaccination (or only vaccination if vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson vaccine) and when the individual is fully vaccinated.
  • Individuals who are vaccinated against covid-19 can also order a printed vaccination passport from sundhed.dk by phone on (+45) 44 22 77 74. This is possible both after the first vaccination and when the individual is fully vaccinated.

If your corona passport documentation was not issued in Denmark, the same rules apply as if your documentation was issued in Denmark.

Your foreign corona passport can be documented both electronically and by presenting printed documentation.

Documentation of vaccination

If you were vaccinated outside Denmark, your vaccination must meet the following requirements:

  • The vaccine must be approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
  • You will receive a valid corona passport 14 to 42 days after the date of your first vaccination. In addition, you will receive a valid corona passport immediately after you have been fully vaccinated. If vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson you will have a valid corona passport after 14 days after your (only) vaccination.
  • Another approved vaccination process involves receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine for the first jab and an mRNA vaccine (Spikevax (from Moderna) or Comirnaty (from Pfizer/BioNTech) for the second.

If you have received an EMA-approved vaccine abroad and you have a Danish CPR-number and NemID or MitID, you can register your vaccination process on sundhed.dk after which it must be certified by a doctor. Once you have done this, the vaccination information will be issued electronically and you will have a valid corona passport.

So far, the EMA has approved the following vaccines against covid-19:

  • Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty)
  • Moderna (Spikevax)
  • AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria)
  • Johnson & Johnson - Janssen Pharmaceutical
  • Novavax (Nuvaxovid)

How is previous covid-19 infection documented?

If you have previously tested positive for covid-19 after taking a PCR test, you can use this as documentation after 11 days by presenting the test result from your positive test. The documentation will be valid for 5 months.

Negative test

Both PCR tests and rapid antigen tests (RAT) can be used as evidence that you have been tested negative for covid-19.

If you become infected before the trip, you should follow the recommendations for self-isolation, which you will find here:

If you are infected with covid-19

You will not lose your European corona passport due to a positive test and may travel as soon as you can end self-isolation in accordance with local recommendations/rules.

However, be aware that the airline you are travelling with and the country you want to travel to may have their own rules regarding previous infection. You can read about entry rules and local rules in the country you are travelling to on the Danish embassies' websites:

Questions about the corona passport app

Updated: 4 April 2022

Please note, that these questions are relevant to Danish residents only.

There are three possible ways to get a valid corona passport in the corona passport app:

  • Negative test. Negative PCR-test or antigen test.
  • Immunity: A positive result of a PCR test lasting a minimum of 11 days and a maximum of 5 months old from the time the test was performed.
  • Completed vaccination: A vaccination course with two doses is considered complete immediately after the final dose. A vaccination course with one dose is considered for 14 days after this single dose. An initiated vaccination course also gives you a valid corona passport. A vaccination course against covid-19 is considered to have started at least 14 days and at most 42 days after the first dose.

The corona passport app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. The app can be installed on Android phones (with operating system Android 5 or higher) and iPhones (with operating system iOS 9 or higher).

You set up yourself in the app using your NemID ot MitID. Next, select a 4-digit PIN, and you can choose whether or not to use your smartphone’s fingerprint or facial recognition features on future occasions when logging into your corona passport.

The corona passport app was developed and is designed specifically to show and scan corona passports, in contrast to existing solutions, such as the MinSundhed app, which serves a broader purpose and collects multiple health details.

The corona passport app collects information about vaccinations, testing status and immunity from previous infection in a single user-friendly solution, the design of which means that it basically displays a few or no personal details about the user. Additionally, the app only shows the valid corona passport, and the passport will automatically disappear if you no longer meet the requirements for a valid corona passport. There is therefore no need to show ID when presenting your corona passport in the app.

The corona passport app also includes a scanning function that can read the QR code in the corona passport which enables it to be used to verify the corona passport on other smartphones. At the same time, the new app enables quickly verifying whether a passport is valid, either by visual inspection or by scanning the passport.

It will still be possible to use other existing corona passport solutions such as the MinSundhed app and sundhed.dk to show a valid corona passport.

Two types of tests are used in the public testing system: PCR testing and rapid antigen testing (RAT). Both tests are included in the corona passport app. Results from saliva tests are also included.

Tests taken at educational institutions or workplaces and reported by professional staff will also be registered and included in the corona passport.

At present, home tests taken by individuals are not included in the corona passport and will not be able to activate a valid corona passport.

Positive antibody tests are also currently unable to activate a valid corona passport.

All citizens with a NemID or MitID and an Apple or Android smartphone can use the coronapas app. Children under the age of 16 are exempt from the requirement for corona passes in Denmark.

If you are travelling, you can see your children's test results (or vaccination if they are up to 12 years old) in the European corona passport. Read more about it here (in Danish):

Coronapas på rejsen

If you get symptoms of covid-19 and feel sick, you are advised to stay home until you are well again. You are not recommended to be tested unless you are at increased risk of developing a severe course with covid-19.

There are two ways to have your corona passport app checked. This will vary from one place to another.

  1. Visual inspection: You show your corona passport (which will shine green) to the passport checker.
  2. Scanned inspection: You show your corona passport (which will shine green) and the passport checker scans the QR code.

With the corona passport app, you may not use screenshots for the verification process. You must log into the app every time your corona passport needs be checked. You can unlock the app using your PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition. Your corona passport will disappear automatically when you no longer meet the criteria for a valid corona passport.

Test results are reported on an ongoing basis, and you will be able to use the corona passport app once your test result has been reported.

If you have taken a PCR test, you will usually receive your test result within 24 hours. If you have taken a rapid antigen test (RAT) you will usually receive your test result within 15-30 minutes.

If you have taken a rapid antigen test (RAT), you can use the documentation you receive from the test provider as a corona passport (such as a text message) in the meantime.

Statens Serum Instituts' website provides a list of the test providers who report test results to SSI and the corona passport app.

Go to the website of Statens Serum Instituts (Danish)

If you have previously tested positive for covid-19 in a PCR test, you can get a corona immunity passport. You will not be able to see your corona immunity passport until 11 days after the date on which your positive covid-19 test was taken.

You will have access to your corona immunity passport if you have a positive PCR test result that is between 11 days and 5 months old.

After your first vaccination, 14 days must pass before you can use your commenced vaccination as a valid corona passport. Therefore, during these 14 days, you must continue to have a negative test result in order to obtain a valid corona passport.

Once you are fully vaccinated, your vaccination will serve as a valid corona passport immediately after you have been fully vaccinated.

If you think that your vaccination information contains errors, please contact the regional hotlines at:

  • Copenhagen Capital Region: (+45) 38 66 00 00
  • Region Zealand: (+45) 70 20 42 22
  • Region of Southern Denmark: (+45) 99 44 07 17
  • North Denmark Region: (+45) 97 64 84 63
  • Central Denmark Region: (+45) 70 23 24 15

If you are in a multi-dose vaccination process and you do not receive your second jab within 42 days after receiving your first, your corona passport will cease to be valid. Therefore, you must be tested to be eligible for a valid corona passport until you get your second vaccination.

If you experience errors or problems with the app, you can contact Sundhed.dk’s support staff by emailing [email protected] or calling (+45) 32 42 03 03.

You can use your corona passport app when travelling – both in the EU and outside EU, but you should be aware that each country might have different entry requirements that you are responsible for complying with. If you have more questions about using the corona passport app when travelling, read here (in Danish):

Coronapas på rejsen

The corona passport app has been developed to support travel abroad both inside and outside the EU, which is why the app will still be able to be used after the phasing out of the app for domestic use.

The information in the corona passport is stored in the corona passport app on the phone itself. Besides this, your health data will only be stored in central health registers.

Scanned results are not stored in the app nor with the passport checker who scans the app’s QR code. The checker can briefly see on his/her scanner whether your corona passport is valid (the checker can see the information for a maximum of 120 seconds). If you have chosen to display your name and date of birth (this can be switched on/off in the app), the checker will also be able to see this information on their scanner. The information is not stored on the checker’s smartphone or alternative scanning device.

The corona passport app is secure to use. The app development process has been keenly focused on security.

Among other things, a comprehensive security test of the app was conducted by an internationally recognised IT security company.

In addition, when the app development process was launched, a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) was prepared to describe the risks relating to user data and the measures applied to mitigate these risks.

Statens Serum Institut is the data controller for the app, as the agency has regulatory responsibility for the Danish Vaccination Register (DDV) and the Microbiology Database (MiBA), which supply data to the solution.

Denmark’s Health Data Agency (Sundhedsdatastyrelsen) is responsible for developing, managing and maintaining the corona passport app and is thus the data processor for the app.

Read more about the app’s personal data processing here (in Danish)

The corona passport app was jointly developed by the following Danish ministries and agencies as part of Denmark’s efforts to combat covid-19: the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Statens Serum Institut, Health Data Agency, Agency for Digitisation, Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice.

Netcompany A/S, an IT digitisation partner and service provider, developed the app on behalf of Denmark’s health authorities and the Agency for Digitisation. In addition, Trifork, an IT and business service provider, developed the web service that links the relevant databases to the app.

The scanner function in the coronapas app can work without you logging in. It can be used to read and check other corona passes by scanning the QR code. The app works on mobile phones that have a camera or a professional scanner that uses image recognition.

If you are already logged in to your app, it is currently not possible to scan other people's corona passes without being logged in, as the app does not have a log out function.

Yes. The corona passport app can be used both online and offline. You do not need an internet connection to view or scan a corona passport in the corona passport app.

No. In the corona passport app you can only see if a corona passport is valid or not. It is therefore not possible to check whether a user is exempted via the corona passport app.
